MdCV Trojans score big win over Hartford

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Marais des Cygnes Valley had been waiting on a second scorer to complement forward Dennis Becker.

On Friday, the Trojans found their man, as Chisom Spencer stepped up to score a game-high 16 points in MdCV’s 52-46 victory over Hartford in Melvern.

“He started the year with a couple big games early, then he went quiet,” MdCV coach Thad Thurston said. “In order for our team to be successful, someone other than Dennis is going to have to score points.”

It looked like Becker’s scoring might be enough to carry MdCV early, as the forward had 10 first-quarter points before having to sit because of foul trouble.

The Trojans still held a 22-8 advantage at halftime and stretched the cushion to as high as 18 points.

“We doing lot of good things in the first half,” Thurston said. “I was real happy defensively, but I knew Hartford wasn’t going anywhere.”

The Jaguars used an 18-12 third quarter run to pull closer, and even came within four points on two different occasions.

MdCV held on, though, moving into a second-place tie with Hartford in the league standings.

Because of the head-to-head tiebreaker, the Trojans will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s Lyon County League Tournament.

Becker finished with 15 points for MdCV, while Brandon Litch added 12.

Adam Ewy (12) and Justin Farr (10) were the only Jags in double figures.
