Children’s choir
The Newton Community Children’s Choir will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church, 12th and Market St. The choir includes children from Newton, Hesston, Goesel and Peabody. A love offering will be collected. The performance is sponsored by the First Christian Church and the Emporia Arts Council.
EAC exhibit
Charles E. Davis of Wichita has art work on exhibit at the Emporia Arts Center, 618 Mechanic St., through Jan. 30. His work was recently shown at the State Capitol before arriving here. Davis’s work is done primarily in watercolor (gouache) on hot pressed illustration board. The press release said his work “reveals his sense of humor, his past experiences and his imagination in his everyday surroundings. Some of his credits include illustrations for greeting cards, calendars, commissions from advertising agencies and numerous other special projects. He has won many awards in some of the top art shows in the United States. He displays his work regularly at art shows, galleries, invitationals and one-man shows. His patrons see him as a ‘contemporary Norman Rockwell.’” Davis has worked more than 20 years in the Wichita Public School system, served two years as a member of the Wichita Art Museum board and was a leader of exhibitions and programs for Wichita black artists.
Faculty recital
The Emporia State University Department of Music opens their Spring 2008 schedule with a Faculty Recital: Terrisa Ziek, horn and cello; Marie Miller, piano at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. Guest artist Mark Springer, trombone, will perform at 3 p.m. Jan. 27 in Heath Recital Hall. General admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens. Information: 341-5431.
Exhibit at ESU
“The Fabric of Landscapes” by ESU emeritus faculty member Bryan Grove opens today at Emporia State University Norman R. Eppink art gallery and continues through Feb. 26. The artist reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today. The news release said Grove is exhibiting “his abstract landscape creations made of fabric and mixed media, as well as a new direction consisting of brightly colored sewn abstract forms representing the new landscape of his life.”
EAC party
The Emporia Arts Council is presenting “Gaelic Storm,” at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 29. (The incorrect date was given last week in Arts Notes). Tickets are $22 for adults; $7.50 for those 18 and younger. According to the press release, the group continues to “broaden the musical horizons of the Celtic music genre by creating compelling originals and fresh arrangements steeped in Irish traditional melody and acoustic instrumentation combined with their unique blend of world rhythms.” They have produced six albums and appeared in the film, “Titanic.” For more information, call 343-6473.
Nelson concert
Willie Nelson will play a concert at 7:30 p.m. March 9 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Jan. 26 through the Expocentre box office, all Ticketmaster locations or charge by phone at (785) 234-4545.
According to a news release from the Expocentre, Topeka radio station 106.9 and TV station WIBW 13 will have chances to win tickets between Monday.
