Spartan Boys Spring

Basketball League

Sign-up has begun for Spartan Spring League Basketball, a league for boys in first through ninth grades.

The program includes a 12- to 15-game schedule of transition basketball in a competitive atmosphere. Games will be played during weekdays (no weekends) beginning April 3. A league tournament will be held during the first week of May.

Cost is $50 per individual, with a family rate of $20 for each additional son. Cost does not include T-shirt uniform.

Registration dates are Monday, Feb. 25 and Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Emporia High School Cafeteria Commons. Forms also can be found at Mike’s Sporting Goods or Jock’s Nitch. Deadline for registration is Monday, March 3.

Girls Winter

Volleyball League

All girls, kindergarten through eighth grade, are invited to participate in an Instructional Play League sponsored by volleyball coaches Gina Peek and Kendra Bloomquist.

The Instructional League is designed to provide girls that are interested the opportunity to play volleyball and improve on their skills, develop knowledge and fundamentals and have fun.

Instruction and match play will be played on Sunday afternoons and one night per week at Emporia High School. The Sunday format is designed for those who have other activities during the week.

Matches will be played and scored in a variety of ways to allow each girl to develop the various skills necessary to play volleyball while learning the rules of the game.

Third-grade girls and younger will play on 5-foot nets using a beach ball. Fourth- and fifth-grade girls will play on a 6-foot net using a light weight training volleyball. Sixth- through eighth-grade girls will play on a regulation net with a regulation volleyball.

The registration fee is $40, with a family rate of $20 for each additional girl. Registration forms can be picked up at each local grade school or at Emporia Middle School. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, Jan. 23.

5th-Grade Boys

Basketball Tournament

A fifth-grade boys basketball tournament sponsored by Emporia State’s Pi Omega Pi will be held on Feb. 10 at the Reading Grade School.

There is a $75 entry fee per team, which guarantees each team at least three games. The registration deadline is Feb. 1.

Hornet Baseball

Hitting Camp

The Emporia State baseball team will be holding a hitting camp for players age 14 through 18 from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday. The camp will be held at ESU’s HPER Building, which is located on the north end of Welch Stadium.

The camp will cover the fundamentals of hitting and bunting with individual instruction. It will take place in two gyms on the lower level of the HPER Building, which includes batting cages and area for drills. Video will be taken and gone over with each player.

Registration forms can be found on the Emporia State baseball team’s Web site, www.emporia.edu/athletics/baseball.

Cost is $50, and checks can be made payable to Emporia State Baseball.
