The Emporia High boys basketball team defeated Joplin (Mo.), 74-59, Thursday night in the first round of the Ralph Miller Classic in Chanute.

The fifth-seeded Spartans were led by Caydrick Bloomquist's 34 points.

Emporia (6-4) will play again at 8 p.m. Friday against eighth-seeded Goddard (2-6), which upset No. 1-seed Chanute, 63-38.
