Four education faculty members at Emporia State University were honored for their achievements in instruction, service, and scholarly activity at a special ceremony on Monday.

Cathy Grover, associate professor in psychology and special education, received the award for excellence in instruction for her encouragement of students to be lifelong learners. Her use of a variety of teaching strategies, the support she gives students, the passion for her subject that motivates her students, and her knowledge of her subject area were also recognized. As one colleague stated, if you ask any undergraduate psychology student who is your toughest professor and who is your favorite professor, the answer would be the same: Cathy Grover.

Elizabeth Dobler, associate professor in elementary teacher education, was honored for excellence in scholarly activity for her scholarly work and research. She believes quality work and research must stem from a genuine desire to know more and an eagerness to share this knowledge. She has published several books, book chapters, journal articles and presented at national, regional and state conferences. Her research on literacy and the Internet has placed her at the forefront of a group of scholars who see the Internet as requiring new skills and reading strategies.

Ken Weaver, professor and chair of psychology and special education, received the excellence in service award for his outstanding and sustained contributions to his profession, his university and his community. Described as thoughtful, unselfish, kindhearted, competent and thorough by his colleagues, Dr. Weaver believes service encourages others toward excellence, complements teaching and research, contributes to productivity, and connects the server to community and family. He has served in many leadership positions on a variety of national and regional committees and professional organizations, most notably the American Psychological Association.

Arlene Dodge, administrative specialist in early childhood/elementary teacher education, received the Darrell E. Wood Service Award. Dodge was recognized for her continued cheerfulness, dedication, helpfulness, efficiency, and willingness to go the extra mile. Peers commented on her graciousness and ability to be “patient beyond what is deserved.” She also was cited for demonstrating technology and computer processes, as well as baking extra treats for department meetings. As one colleague stated, “She takes time to care how you are.”

Each year The Teachers College presents the Darrell E. Wood Service Award to an individual who has supported the mission of the college in a unique or outstanding manner.

Recipients were nominated by their respective academic departments and selected by a university-wide committee.

The awards were presented by Larry Clark, interim executive director of the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, and Damon Leiss, chair of The Teachers College Dean’s Advisory Council.
