Wonderful neighbors

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

WE HAVE ALL heard the things wrong with Emporia, but there is another side to the story.

I moved to town about nine years ago and even though I have a large family and they help, they don’t live in town so aren’t around all the time. Neighbors are the most wonderful people and this is my way to say thank you.

I was pulling on the rope of my tiller and it wasn’t doing anything. I heard a voice behind me.

“Need a little help?”

A teenage boy across the street had been watching. One pull and it ran.

I was raking leaves and, again, a teenage girl from another family asked to help hold the bag to stuff leaves in.

One neighbor helps an elderly woman with yard work and helped me plant a tree and uses his pickup to haul garden trash off.

The neighbor on the other side noticed I was a bit unstable walking after surgery. When he mowed his yard, he just continued and mowed mine. My son couldn’t get in here at the right time so my neighbor tilled my garden this spring and his two young boys helped plant tomatoes and pepper and cantaloupe plants. This fall, he raked the leaves in my yard twice. When the snow came , I didn’t’ realize it had stopped falling until I heard the snow shovel. They had cleaned my sidewalk.

I love to play in the snow and put on overshoes, coat, hat and gloves and went out to shovel the driveway and these boys came and joined me. I’m a white-haired lady who really appreciates her neighbors. I hope this is true all over Emporia.

God Bless your good neighbors, Eileen. And how nice of you to say such nice things about them. No wonder they are good to you.
