Tech college gets good financial report

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Halfway through the fiscal year, the financial numbers look good for Flint Hills Technical College.

At its monthly meeting Monday, the board of trustees approved its financial report for fiscal year 2008. Through December, Director of Accounting Nancy Thompson reported before the board’s vote, the college had generated 53 percent of its budgeted revenue and used just 45 percent of budgeted expenditures.

“So we like to see our expenses low and the revenue high,” Thompson said. “So that’s a good thing.”

So far, FHTC has generated $2,564,662 in revenue out of a fiscal year 2008 budget of $4,807,567. It has expended $2,150,392 out of a budgeted $4,807,311.

Also, Flint Hills’ enrollment numbers for spring remained steady with respect to the last two spring semesters, Dean Lisa Kirmer reported during the discussion portion of the meeting. FHTC’s head count for the new spring semester was at 393 students, the same number as spring 2006 and one more than last spring.

In other action Monday, the board:

F Recognized the appointment of Janet Anderson-Story to the college’s Interlibrary Loan Development Program task force.

F Approved an amended policy for employee military leave which stipulates that the college honors the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act of 1994. The policy will mirror that used by the Kansas Board of Regents.

F Approved the development of procedures on communicable diseases for the safety and protection of everyone who studies, works or visits the college.

F Approved two accepted bids for equipment for the school’s machine tool technology program: A Super Mini Mill from Haas Factory Outlet for $45,277 and a Mazak QTN-100 CNC Lathe from Concept Technical Sales for $86,690.

F Heard President Dean Hollenbeck and Kirmer briefly discuss the hard copy of the school’s annual report for fiscal year 2007. Kirmer said the key portion of the report was the increase in clock hours of instruction from 2006. Clock hours increased by 39,097.

F Discussed the potential formation of a program to train dispatchers for 911 emergency and other such services.
