Teacher honored
Shane Heiman, a second-grade teacher at Village Elementary School, learned Monday that he is one of 32 Kansas Horizon Award winners for 2008. He was notified by telephone Monday by Kansas Commissioner of Education Alexa Posny.
Heiman’s students were thrilled with the announcement, but not surprised.
Village Principal Wendy Moore said the award was well deserved.
“He’s worked really hard and he goes above and beyond for these kids.”
The program is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education to recognize exemplary first-year teachers.
Heiman is a graduate of Emporia State University and did his student teaching at Village. He is in his second year as a teacher.
