With his team leading by just four points a few minutes into Saturday’s game against Centre, Northern Heights coach Lanny Massey had not seen what he wanted offensively out of the Wildcats.
But over the next two and a half quarters, the Wildcats went about completely dismantling Centre’s defense on their way to picking up an 88-46 victory over Centre in a makeup game from the Herington Tournament that was postponed because of weather.
Heights ended the first quarter on a 15-4 run that turned a 12-8 advantage into a 27-12 edge heading into the second period, and then the Wildcats outscored Centre 47-24 over the next two quarters to blow the game wide open.
“We started a little slow (Saturday) and let Centre play with us for the first part of the first quarter,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “We went on a 15-4 run to end the first quarter and did not look back.”
Much of Heights’ outburst happened because two Wildcats, Levi Hizar and Haydon Parks, started to get their shooting touch late in the first quarter. Hizar and Parks combined for 24 points in the first quarter, as they went on to finish with 22 and 24 points, respectively. Parks also finished with eight rebounds.
Heights’ Pete Symmonds also got going in the second quarter, scoring all 10 of his points in the eight minutes before halftime.
The Wildcats provided the knockout punch in the third quarter, going on a 23-9 scoring run to turn a 51-27 lead into a 74-36 advantage heading into the final period. The Wildcats shot 39-of-68 (57 percent) overall.
“Offensively, we are really starting to come around in our half-court game,” Massey said. “Our perimeter players are really starting to complement our post play.
“Overall, our team is playing very well right now, but we need to correct some things on the defensive end of the floor.”

Already leading by 17 at the half, the Ladycats used a 29-4 scoring run in the third period to put the game well out of reach.
“I challenged the girls to come out in the second half and finish the game in the third quarter,” Heights coach Tim Riemann said, “and they did a very good job.”
Though Centre outscored Heights, 18-4, in the final period, it was not nearly enough to overcome the 60-18 advantage Heights had built for itself heading into the final stanza.
Tess Hobson led the way for Heights, scoring a game-high 20 points, while Amy Lee joined her in double figures with 10 points. Andrea Miller grabbed nine rebounds for go with seven points, while Lee, Amy Boline and Sarah Boline each recorded five steals, as Heights collected 24 steals altogether.
“This was a good win for us and hopefully it will give us some momentum going into the Flint Hills Shootout,” Riemann said.
