Olpe boys use big 2nd-half run to sprint past Burlingame, 82-58

Saturday, January 12, 2008

The Olpe boys kept their undefeated record intact, using a second-half run to pull away from Burlingame in an 82-58 victory.

“We did some good things, but it definitely was not our best outing,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “Give Burlingame credit. They’ve got some good kids, and they made some shots.”

The Eagles (9-0, 8-0 LCL) led just 38-32 at half before wearing down the Bearcats.

Olpe out-scored Burlingame 21-10 in the third quarter and 23-16 in the fourth.

It looked early on as if the Eagles might run away with it.

Olpe started the game on an 8-0 run, which forced a quick Burlingame timeout.

The Bearcats (3-7, 2-5 LCL) responded with a couple of Chris Patterson jumpers to get back in it, then out-scored Olpe, 19-15, in the second quarter to cut the lead to six.

Burlingame’s 32 first-half points were the most given up by Olpe in a half this season.

Cole Krueger led Olpe, scoring 27 points. Ten of those points came in the first quarter.

Josh Klumpe added 17, while Alex Medenciy had 12.

Patterson was the only Bearcat in double figures with 19.

Hartford boys 69, Chase County 38

The Hartford Jaguars dominated the Chase County Bulldogs in Friday night’s 31-point win.

In the first quarter, it seemed like an evenly matched ballgame, as Hartford led 13-11.

Chase County lost its momentum in the second quarter, though, as the Bulldogs fell into an 11-point deficit going into the half.

The second half didn’t turn out well for the Bulldogs, either, as Hartford went on a 22-9 run to pull away.

“I was really pleased with our defensive effort tonight,” Hartford coach Chuck Ewy said. “We did a much better job stopping dribble penetration, and we rebounded the ball well.”

The Jaguars’ Justin Farr stepped up his game, leading the scoring with 20 points. Following Farr were teammate Taylor Heckathorn (11 points) and Storm Cartee (10).

Chase County’s Eli Fowler contributed 10 points.

The Tigers overcame a 37-32 deficit heading into the fourth quarter, out-scoring Flinthills, 19-6, in the final eight minutes.

“I felt we played really well the second half,” Lyndon coach Michael Massey said. “We didn’t play very well the first half. We just stood around and didn’t get anything done.”

It is Lyndon’s second consecutive win after starting the season 0-6.

The Mustangs showed a lack of consistency, decreasing their point total each quarter.

Teammates Derek Banzhaf and Alex Wendling led the Tigers, as both scored 10 points.

Grant Vogt and Micah Womacks led the Mustangs, scoring nine points each.

Following these leading scorers were the Tigers’ Shea Kirsop and the Mustangs’ Tyler Wilson, who had eight points apiece before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
