Trooper ‘out of service’

After 27 years of service with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Lt. John Marmon has retired. He stepped down from the patrol in December, ending a career that began in 1980 with road-patrol duties in the Emporia area.

In 1990, when the patrol created its first Narcotics Detection K-9 Unit, Marmon was the agency’s first dog handler, with his canine partner, Murphy Brown.

With more training, he became a certified instructor for explosive detection, narcotics detection and patrol canines and in 1993, the K-9 unit became a full-service Police Service Dog Unit. Marmon became an instructor and eventually was certified as an evaluating judge for police service dogs.

In 2004, he transferred to the Homeland Security Operations division, where he remained until his retirement.

Riley hits new heights

Emporian Mike Riley has reached Master Coordinators Level as an independent distributor for Market America, a product brokerage and Internet marketing company.

In a news release, the company said Riley earned the new status through success in sales, leadership and management in motivating and training other distributors during September.

Riley will be recognized in PowerLine, the company’s monthly magazine, and will also be listed in the company’s profiles of success annual catalog.

Market America, founded in 1992, has more than 125,000 independent distributors around the world. Information is available at www.marketamerica.com.

Two graduate

An Emporia police officer and an area sheriff’s deputy were among 57 graduates of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center near Yoder last month.

Officer Timothy Wacker of the Emporia Police Department and Deputy Samuel E. Ralston of the Osage County Sheriff’s Department began the 14-week training course Sept. 10.

The training center is a unit of University of Kansas Continuing Education. It was established in 1968 as the central law enforcement training facility for the state. The center trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol. Funding for the training center is generated from court docket fees from municipal and state courts. No funds from the state’s general revenue are used to operate the center.

Avon cutting jobs

NEW YORK — Avon Products Inc. on Tuesday said it will cut 2,400 jobs as part of its multiyear restructuring plan, which will cost more than originally expected and ultimately save the beauty-products maker $430 million annually.

Avon unveiled its restructuring program in Nov. 2005. It involved steep job cuts, the elimination of management layers and the realignment of manufacturing centers and outsourcing work to countries with cheaper labor costs.
