Marais des Cygnes Valley’s Dennis Becker is defended by Madison’s Sid Childers, left, and Kaleb Schankie Friday night at Madison High School. Madison defeated Marais des Cygnes Valley, 44-39.
MADISON — Just call the Madison Bulldogs the heart-attack kids.
After watching a 24-point lead disappear in last month’s loss to Olpe, Madison coach Alan Brown had his blood pressure raised once again Friday when his team gave up a 15-point advantage in the second half to Marais des Cygnes Valley.
“I turned to my assistant coach and said, ‘Is it déjà vu?’” Brown said.
Luckily for the Bulldogs, Kaleb Schankie made sure history didn’t repeat itself, scoring eight of his team’s nine fourth-quarter points in Madison’s 44-39 squeaker over MdCV.
After at first not succeeding, trying, then trying again, Schankie was able to put the game away for Madison.
Schankie was fouled with 54.5 seconds left, but he missed the front end of his one-and-one try.
MdCV’s Chisom Spencer had his own one-and-one opportunity on the next possession, but he missed his first free throw.
Again, Schankie grabbed the rebound. Again, he was hacked.
And again he missed the front end of his bonus, leaving his second shot in a row short.
MdCV’s Brandon Litch missed a three for the lead, and Schankie came away with the basketball. He predicted what was coming next.
“I knew they were going to try to foul me again,” Schankie said, “so I just had to take a deep breath and get back up there and make them.”
He did just that, sinking both freebies with 17.8 seconds left to push Madison’s lead to 43-39.
The Bulldogs held on to the advantage from there.
“We’ve been trying to finish,” Schankie said, “and finally pulled one off.”
Madison (7-3, 4-3 LCL) controlled the game’s first half before the crazy ending.
The Bulldogs used an 8-0 first-quarter run to open up a 14-6 lead, then extended that advantage to 30-16 at halftime.
Meanwhile, MdCV struggled with finding offense outside of Dennis Becker.
The 6-foot-7 forward scored 10 of his team’s first 12 points but didn’t get much help. The Trojans didn’t have a player other than Becker score a field goal until there was 1:38 left in the second quarter.
“We dug ourselves too deep a hole playing tentative in the first half,” MdCV coach Thad Thurston said. “I don’t know whether we were scared or what, but we had some kids just not play their game.”
MdCV (6-2, 5-2 LCL) came to life after an Eric Porter 3-pointer made it 35-20 Madison with 5:33 left in the third quarter.
The Trojans held Madison scoreless for the next nine minutes, using a frantic full-court press to force six third-quarter turnovers.
“We were just out of control,” Schankie said. “We were trying to be too impatient and forcing things.”
Drew Woodruff’s jumper brought MdCV all the way back, completing a 15-0 run that made it a 35-all tie with 5:27 left in the game.
“The second half,” Thurston said, “was our basketball.”
The final five minutes belonged to Schankie.
After a steal, he put in a layup to break Madison’s scoring drought, then made his next two shots inside to push the lead back to 41-37.
Schankie made six of his last seven shots from the field, finishing with a game-high 17 points. He also added 11 rebounds.
“I’ve been in a slump the last few games,” Schankie said. “Hopefully, I’m out of it now.”
Caleb Hamilton added seven for Madison, while Porter and Sid Childers both had six.
Becker posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Woodruff contributed eight points, with all of them coming in the second half.

Madison's Morgan Stout goes up for a shot Friday night against Marais des Cygnes Valley at Madison High School. Stout scored 32 points in the Lady Bulldogs' 72-38 win over the Lady Trojans.
The sophomore scored 17 points in the first quarter alone, helping the Bulldogs to an early 26-6 lead.
“She was lighting it up,” Madison coach Glen Stout said. “She was hitting from everywhere. It’s the best game, by far, that she’s had.”
One can only wonder how many points Morgan Stout could have gotten had she played a few more minutes.
The 5-foot-10 guard played just four minutes in the second half, but even then she took full advantage of her time.
In the final 3 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, Stout had a 3-pointer, a baseline jumper and two layups, pushing her above the 30-point plateau.
“I was able to get open low and get two-point shots off at the basket,” Morgan Stout said. “I didn’t have to shoot much from the outside.”
Stout didn’t play in the fourth quarter, as Madison held a 69-31 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs used defense and fast-break points to build their comfortable lead.
The full-court press flustered MdCV all game, resulting in transition layups for Madison.
“Our defense has been the key all year,” Glen Stout said. “They’re buying into it finally. It’s taken them awhile.
“They think, ‘Oh, we don’t have to play defense if we can go down and score,’ but they’re figuring out if they play defense, it’s easier to score.”
MdCV did manage 12 points in the second quarter and 13 in the third, thanks partly to good free-throw shooting.
The Lady Trojans finished 16-of-24 from the charity stripe.
“We tried to fight back,” MdCV coach Donald Dyke said. “They’ve just got too many numbers and too much size.”
Shelby Buster added 13 points for Madison, while Tera Titus had nine.
Jessica Schmidt led MdCV with 15 points.
