Former Emporia State head football coach Dave Wiemers is shown on the sideline in this 2005 file photo. Wiemers, who was head coach at ESU from 2001-06, accepted the defensive coordinator position at Pittsburg State on Thursday.

It didn't take former Emporia State football coach Dave Wiemers long to make a return to the MIAA.

Wiemers, who resigned as Hornets head coach after the 2006 season, has been hired as Pittsburg State's defensive coordinator, the university released in a statement today.

"Dave comes to our staff with vast coaching experience,” PSU coach Chuck Broyles said. "He has great familiarity with the MIAA and our regional recruiting circle having spent six years as head coach at Emporia State."

Wiemers compiled a 35-32 record in his six years as head coach at ESU.

Though he only served as offensive coordinator and head coach for ESU, Wiemers was previously a defensive coordinator from 1994-98 at Saginaw Vallley State for then-coach Jerry Kill.

Wiemers replaces Anton Stewart, who stepped down from the position. He had been in charge of the unit since 1994.

Last year, as offensive coordinator for Tarleton State, Wiemers' unit averaged 37.2 points per game. TSU went 9-2 but failed to qualify for the Division-II playoffs.

"(Dave)’s a proven recruiter and his experience as a head coach will enable him to provide added insights into the everyday workings of a college football program," Broyles said.

The MIAA league is obviously demanding and very competitive. There is no room in the league for AD's who try to win on the "cheap". With that said AD Weiser should be(???) raising money for the program but ultimately President Lane will either decide make it important or let it continue to be a red headed stepchild and a public loser for ESU. Coach Weimers is a good person and family man in my opinion and deserves to be associated with a winner.....he will be at Pitt State....PSU President Bryant knows it is important at his school and for the community of Pittsburg. The ball is in President Lane's court to make personnel and/or financial decisions to compete in MIAA football.
