The Emporia High wrestling team split a pair of duals Wednesday night, falling to Gardner-Edgerton, 44-24, before defeating Paola, 55-18.
The matchups against both schools were a contrast in vastly different styles, which contributed to the lopsided scoring in both duals, EHS coach Greg Buckbee said.
“Again, it was kind of a roller coaster ride for us — we were up and down,” Buckbee said. “Gardner wrestled a different style than we were used to, and they caught us in several things we hadn’t seen. Because of that, they got a lot more bonus points.
“Against Paola, it was just the opposite. We got all the bonus points.”
Against Gardner-Edgerton, the Spartans actually picked up six victories, but it was not enough to overcome five pins by Gardner.
Jared Dakin (112 pounds), Chase Sanchez (130), Logan Gaskill (152), Ryan Bass (189), Josh Rodriguez (215) and Lorenzo Serna (285) each won their bouts, with Serna pinning Pat Thomas and Dakin, Sanchez and Rodriguez each claiming major decision wins.
But Tyler Trahoon (103), Tavo Dikin (135), Taylor Lee (145), Caleb Chiroy (160) and Pedro Gonzales (171) each suffered losses by pins, which knocked the Spartans from contention.
Against Paola, the Spartans turned the tables in a big way, recording six victories by pins and another by major decision.
Trahoon, Justin Rose (125), Sal Tovar (130), Dikin, Rodriguez and Serna all pinned their opponents, while Bass took a major decision win over Dave Renberg.
The other victory for EHS against Paola came from Gaskill, who earned a 7-0 decision over C.J. Stallbaumer.
EHS is back in action Friday and Saturday at the Newton Invitational.
