American Legion Post 5 has more than $9,000 to award in scholarships this year to sons and daughters of U.S. military veterans.
Post Commander John Sanderson recently appointed former Emporia school superintendent Harold Hosey to head a committee that will promote the scholarships’ availability at Emporia High School.
Hosey said the scholarships can be used at community colleges, universities or vocational-technical schools located in Kansas.
“The scholarships range from $200 for a student pursuing a diploma in licensed practical nursing, to $1,500 for a high school graduate desiring to attend a community college or university in the state of Kansas,” Hosey said in a news release. “Other scholarships include students showing an interest or talent in music, athletics, education and liberal arts.”
Eagle Scouting and shooting sports such as marksmanship also are among the activities allowed for application.
Applicants must be “average or better” scholastically, Hosey said, and must be the son or daughter of a veteran to be eligible.
A total of 13 scholarships are being offered.
Assistant Principal Steve Turner and head counselor Teresa Maley, both at EHS, will have information about the scholarships available for students.

Why isn't this available to area schools as well? Many of their fathers are veterans too. What's the deal, Judge Sanderson?

As soon as I pressed the button, I realized the answer to my own question. Other cities have their own posts...or I'm guessing that they do. Right?
