Emporia High girls top team in Class 5A

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

The Emporia High girls basketball team moved up one spot to No. 1 in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Class 5A poll.

The Lady Spartans (6-0) had been ranked second behind St. Thomas Aquinas, but because Aquinas lost to Blue Valley, 55-49, on Jan. 4, that dropped the Lady Saints to third while Emporia moved up to No. 1 and Bishop Carroll took the No. 2 spot.

EHS is back in action tonight when it takes on Highland Park at Emporia High School. The girls game will start at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game. The EHS boys are ranked No. 9.

Both Olpe’s boys and girls teams, which have started their seasons 7-0, are now ranked third in Class 1A. The Olpe boys moved up seven spots from No. 10 and are ranked behind top-ranked Centralia and second-ranked South Gray. As for the Lady Eagles, who moved up one spot, they sit behind Quivira Heights and Blue Valley-Randolph.

The Lyndon girls (5-0) stayed put at No. 6 in the Class 2A poll, while the Lebo boys entered the Class 2A boys poll at No. 10.

The Northern Heights boys, despite a 6-0 record, are unranked in the Class 3A boys poll.
