Completes boot camp
Dustin M. Johnson of Allen graduated Dec. 7, 2007, from Marine Boot Camp at San Diego, Calif. On Jan. 15, he will leave to finish training in San Diego and then leave California to be trained in diesel mechanics. The son of Jeanette Johnson of Allen, he attended Northern Heights High School in Allen. He is the grandson of Ann Johnson of Emporia, Bud and Mary Johnson of Hartford and Jovita Smith of Manhattan. He is the great-grandson of Jesse Johnson Sr., of Bushong.
On dean’s list
Emily Nickel of Olpe and Sarah Jones of Strong City were named to the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s List at Baker University in Baldwin City. These students maintained a 3.5 grade-point average or higher during the fall 2007 semester.
Washburn graduate
Melissa Wagner of Lebo received a bachelor’s degree in health services administration from Washburn University during the Dec. 14 commencement ceremony.
Pittsburg graduate
Matthew Medenciy of Olpe received a bachelor’s degree in technology from Pittsburg State University during the Dec. 14 commencement ceremony. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Medenciy.
On fellowship
Kelly Lohmeyer of Osage City, a freshman student at the University of Kansas, has completed her first semester as a Self Engineering Leadership Fellow in the KU School of Engineering. Only 15 students were selected to be part of the inaugural class of Self Fellows. Lohmeyer, who graduated from Osage City High School and is studying chemical engineering at KU, is the daughter of Jim and Gail Lohmeyer of Osage City.
KU graduates
Candidates for degrees for the fall 2007 semester from the University of Kansas included Andrew Wayne Hauth of Burlington, bachelor’s degree in general studies and psychology, son of Larry and Paula Hauth; Laura Ashleigh McMurray of Burlington, bachelor’s degrees in marketing and psychology, daughter of Jim McMurray; Jennifer C. Smith, master’s degree in accounting and information systems, daughter of Brad and Colleen Smith, all graduates of Burlington High School; and Pamela Sue Old of Allen, bachelor’s degree in business and accounting, daughter of Richard and Josie Old, graduate of Alma High School.
Complete certification
Students from the area who completed the University of Kansas certification for service learning during the fall 2007 semester were Lacie Rochelle Reed of Burlington and Cindy R. Heilman of Council Grove.
Reed, the daughter of Stacy and Debbie Reed and graduate of Burlington High School, is a junior at KU studying for a bachelor’s degree in sport science.
Heilman, the daughter of Randy and Joyce Heilman and graduate of Council Grove High School, is a senior at KU studying for a bachelor’s degree in social work.
Gets big scholarship
Zachary Stubby of Burlington is a first-year student recipient of the Bethel College Outstanding Academic Scholarship, valued at $22,400 over a four-year period. Stubby, the son of Harold and Marilyn Stubby, is a 2007 graduate of Burlington High School.
In service learning
Area students enrolled in service learning classes as part of a tax research class at the University of Kansas are Jennifer C. Smith of Burlington, daughter of Brad and Colleen Smith, Burlington High School; Thomas Scott Mitchell of Eureka, son of Mike Mitchell, Eureka High School; Jeffrey J. Commerford of Allen, son of Jeff and Rae Jean Commerford, Northern Heights High School. All are master’s degree students in accounting and information systems.
