The Olpe girls picked up where they left off before the winter break with a 68-20 victory over Flinthills on Thursday night in Olpe.
Led by freshman Kathryn Flott’s game-high 20 points and senior Megan Woods’ 16 points, the Lady Eagles quickly ran away with things on their way to a 6-0 record overall and a 5-0 Lyon County League record. Olpe jumped out to a 22-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, and by halftime, the Lady Eagles had opened up a 46-10 lead over the Lady Mustangs (1-7, 1-4).
Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said despite some illnesses and the typical post-break sluggishness, he saw improvement from his team.
“Some of the things we’ve been working on to get better, we were better in those areas,” Nelson said. “We weren’t as sharp as I had hoped, though.”
With such a large lead to work with, Olpe went about trying to develop its bench. As such, reserves Tanna Bell and Jill Cole had productive nights offensively, as Bell scored nine points and Cole chipped in five.
“We said we were going to make an attempt to get deeper and get eight, nine, 10 kids understanding what we’re doing out there,” Nelson said. “We played deep and played a lot of our bench. Not all of them scored, but a lot of our kids off the bench really contributed solid minutes.”
Hannah Jackson and Caitlin Nelson each scored seven points to lead Flinthills.
Olpe and Flinthills both are back in action tonight, as the Lady Eagles have a home game against Marais des Cygnes Valley while the Lady Mustangs meet up with Waverly in Melvern.

The Olpe boys got in one last tuneup Thursday night before tonight’s battle of unbeatens against Marais des Cygnes Valley, as the Eagles cruised to a 68-39 victory over Flinthills in Olpe.
Olpe (6-0 overall, 5-0 Lyon County League) used stifling defense in the second and third quarters to take control of the game, which had been close at the end of the first quarter when Olpe led just 16-12.
The Eagles out-scored the Mustangs 21-8 in the second quarter to open up a 37-20 halftime lead — Ethan Schneider had 11 points in the first half — and then Cole Krueger went off for 12 of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter to help the Eagles stretch their lead to a comfortable 60-33 heading into the final period.
“Starting at about midway through the second quarter and into the third quarter, our defense really did a lot for us,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “We really pressured them and forced them into some bad situations, and that got us easier buckets. And then Cole kind of erupted in the third quarter.”
Olpe got plenty of scoring help from the rest of its lineup, as Josh Klumpe (14 points) and Schneider (13) also scored in double figures to go with six other Eagles who scored.
Olpe also held a significant advantage in foul calls, as Flinthills was whistled 23 times while Olpe committed just 11 fouls. Olpe connected on 27 of 35 free-throw attempts.
Grant Vogt led Flinthills with 15 points, while Dalton Skiles and Micah Womacks added eight points apiece.
The Eagles will face Marais des Cygnes Valley (5-0, 4-0) tonight in Olpe, while Flinthills will play host to Waverly (3-4, 2-2).
