Stueve named MIAA Player of the Week

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Emporia State women’s basketball player Michelle Stueve was named the MIAA Player of the Week. It is the second time she has earned the honor this season, making her the fourth Hornet to earn Player of the Week Honors in the first six weeks.

Stueve, a 6-foot-2 senior from Olpe, earned All-Tournament honors at the Hoop ‘n’ Surf Classic on Dec. 17-18, as she led the No. 14 Lady Hornets to a pair of wins in Hawaii.

Stueve scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds and had two blocked shots as ESU knocked off then-No. 23 Shaw, 93- 86. In an 80- 59 victory over regional foe Oklahoma Panhandle State the next day, Stueve had 25 points and eight rebounds with two steals and two assists.

For the tournament, she was 21-of-33 (63.6 percent) from the field, including 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from three-point range.

ESU baseball to open season at No. 18

The Emporia State baseball team will open the 2008 season ranked No. 18 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s NCAA Division II preseason poll. ESU is the highest ranked team from the MIAA and the Central Region.

The Hornets were 41-24 last season and won the MIAA Tournament championship, sweeping Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. ESU advanced to the NCAA Central Region tournament for the fourth straight season.

The Hornets are scheduled to open the 2008 season on Feb. 15 at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.

ESU is the only NCAA Division II school to have its baseball (No. 18), men’s (No. 23) and women’s (No. 13) basketball and volleyball (No. 15) teams all nationally ranked in the top 25 at this time.
