The parents of Ezequiel Isaias Velazquez thought they were getting a Christmas baby but got a New Year’s baby instead. Ezequiel was the first baby born in Emporia in 2008.
Patricia Velazquez, Ezequiel’s mother, said he was due to arrive on Christmas. When he didn’t come, she went in for an induction on Dec. 31. At 3:37 a.m. New Years Day, Ezequiel made his appearance by caesarian section at Newman Regional Health. Velazquez, who works at Birch Telecom, said she had to have a C-section because Ezequiel was too big. He weighed nine and a half pounds and was 20 inches long.
“It’s exciting,” Velazquez said this morning as she held Ezequiel. “They told me he was the first one born in 2008. It was exciting.”
Velazquez said Ezequiel is doing well.
“I think he’s having some tummy problems but he just cries for a little bit,” she said. “He’s a good baby.”
Ezequiel has two siblings, Miguel Gudino, 10, and Esmeralda Velazquez, 9. Jose Velazquez, who works at Wheeler Lumber, is Ezequiel’s father.
Patricia Velazquez said Miguel is happy with his new sibling.
“He loves him,” she said. “He was begging for a baby brother or sister for years.”
The family received a gift basket from Newman that included an assortment of baby items and a blanket commemorating the first baby of 2008.
