80th birthday celebrations

Nona Thomas of Emporia will be the guest of honor at a reception and surprise card shower at 3 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion to celebrate her 80th birthday. Cards may be sent to 621 Market St., Emporia, KS 66801.

Dale Stinson will be the guest of honor at an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Osage City Senior Center to celebrate his 80th birthday. Dale and his wife, Bonnie, have been married 58 years. They have four children, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He request no gifts. Cards may be sent to 3586 Road U, Reading, KS 66868.

Girl Scout event

Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts, ages 14-18, are invited to Starwoods Outdoor Center near Wichita from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for “Mirror, Mirror,” a chance for “pampering themselves — inside and out,” according to the news release. The cost is $3. Activities will focus on “inclusion, influence and appreciation as girls discover activities that can be previewed on the Dove Self-Esteem site, www.campaignforrealbeauty.com. NAMI training

Emporia’s branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will hold legislative and advocacy training for people with mental or physical disabilities from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the NAMI main office, 1000 Lincoln St. The training will be in preparation for Advocacy Days, taking place Feb. 25 at the Capitol in Topeka.
