Schools bill advances

A bill to cushion the damage of the Tyson layoffs on Lyon County school districts passed the Kansas Senate by a 39-0 vote on Thursday and now will move to the House.

Sen. Jim Barnett introduced Senate Bill 628, which stipulated that funding for next year could drop no more than 2 percent for unified school districts 251, north Lyon County; USD 252, southern Lyon County; USD 253, Emporia; and USD 284, Chase County.

“Twenty-five percent of (Emporia’s) students had one or two parents working at Tyson — now that’s one-fourth, 1,200 students,” Barnett said.

He said the bill would allow the Emporia district to retain teachers for next school year, when it will be known how many students the district is losing.

“It speaks to the strong support of the Kansas Senate for education,” Barnett said. “I think it also indicates the compassion and concern that my fellow colleagues in the Senate have for this region due to the economic disaster that we’ve experienced.”
