The Friends of the Flint Hills Community Health Center, a new organization designed to help the health center, held its first meeting Wednesday evening to elect officers and call for more members.
Newly-elected president Merle Bolz said the need for such an organization has been identified for several years.
According to the bylaws adopted Wednesday, the purpose of the “independent organization shall be to render service to Flint Hills Community Health Center and its clients through donation of time, talent and treasure.”
The organization is housed under the umbrella of the Emporia Community Foundation. Being housed under the Emporia Community Foundation saves Friends of the Flint Hills Community Health Center money and gets it a better return on its investment, said Danica Case, newly-elected treasurer.
“By piggybacking on the Emporia Community Foundation, we thought we could make the best use of the funds this organization has,” Case said.
The organization needs to raise $10,000 for its fund to be endowed. With new memberships and seed money, the organization now has $3,520.
“It’s a good start,” said Scott O’Mara, board liaison to the community health center. “As far as getting to $10,000, we’re virtually halfway there.”
The friends organization is still seeking members. Any interested people should call O’Mara at 342-4864.
