Year of the Frog at the zoo

The David Traylor Zoo is celebrating 2008 as the “Year of the Frog.” From 4 to 7 p.m. on Leap Day, Friday. Zoo staff will have frog games, crafts, activities and live frogs and amphibians to view at the Zoo Education Center, 75 Soden Road.

Peter Pan Playground update

The Peter Pan Playground Committee is inviting the community to join them at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lee Beran Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth Ave., for an update on the playground project.

Barry Segal from Leathers and Associates will help with the organization of playground build week and update the community on the status of the project. He will meet with committee chairmen all day Saturday. Segal will return for construction on May 1.

Volunteers of all skill levels are needed: food servers, daycare providers, skilled and unskilled builders and more. For more information, call Mike Dorcey at 794-3476 or Robin Nelson at 342-1600.

Are you the Easter bunny?

The Neosho Rapids Community Projects is sponsoring a Secret Easter Bunny contest, beginning Saturday. Ask anyone in the Neosho Rapids area, “Are you the Neosho Rapids secret Easter bunny?” The first to find the bunny wins a $25 gift certificate.

The winner will be announced at the Neosho Rapids Easter Egg Hunt at 2 p.m. March 22 on the east side of the Neosho Rapids community building.

Become a barbecue judge

The Kansas City Barbeque Society will be host Saturday for a class for anyone who wants to become a “Certified Barbeque Judge,” according to a news release.

The class, to be held at Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 101 Cottonwood St., begins with registration at 9 a.m. and the class 10 a.m.

Participants will learn how to judge food based on the society’s three key categories: appearance, taste and texture/tenderness.” Once certified, participants may judge cooking events, both locally and regionally.
