A rumor circulating around Emporia regarding Emporia’s Dillon’s store located at 902 E. 12th Ave. closing is untrue, according to company officials. The Gazette received phone calls late last week and followed up on the rumor with the company.
“Any plans for changes in operations regarding our store in Emporia should be considered rumors and speculation,” said Sheila Lowrie of Dillon Stores.

They have closed other stores in Kansas recently. I guess we will know the store is closing the same way the other store closed back in May '05. Just what Emporia needs... more empty buildings.

Brandy, my dear: did we read the same comment made by the Dillon's representative? Apparently not. Nowhere in Ms. Lowrie's statement does it even hint that the Emporia store is immune from closing. All she said was that the Dillon's corporation would like you to believe that information to be "rumor and speculation" until told otherwise. In "corporate speak" that means "maybe, maybe not; it's none of your business." My 40 years in a corporate environment leads me to believe that store is indeed being considered for closing. Otherwise, she would have said it wasn't. You are reading into Dillon's statement what you wanted to hear, not what they said. Why do you think Ms. Lowrie has that job? She is trained to say a lot without saying anything.
