Olpe girls win Regional title with 60-39 victory over Southern Coffey Co.

Monday, February 25, 2008

The Olpe Lady Eagles overcame a rough showing offensively early on in Saturday’s Regional championship game against Southern Coffey County, outscoring the Lady Titans by a combined 17 points in the second and third quarters on their way to a 60-39 victory at Hartford.

The Lady Eagles could only manage four points against the SCC defense in the opening period, as Kylie Haag and Kathryn Flott each got a shot to fall, but that was it. However, Olpe’s defense was even more stifling, holding SCC to just two points in the first quarter.

After that, it was all Lady Eagles.

Flott began to warm up in the 8 minutes before halftime, scoring six points in the second quarter. Erica Brinkman and Megan Woods each chipped in four points, while Katie Moyer knocked down a 3-pointer to help Olpe to a 21-12 lead by halftime.

Olpe then put things away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Titans 24-14 in the frame to push the lead out to 45-26. Flott again scored six points in the frame, while Moyer added two more treys.

SCC, whose only two losses have come to Olpe, cut the lead to 12 in the fourth quarter, but could not get any closer.

Flott finished with a game-high 20 points, while Moyer ended with 14.

Lauren Ohl led SCC (21-2) with 11 points.

With the victory, Olpe (23-0) earned the No. 1 seed in this week’s Sub-State at White Auditorium in Emporia. The Lady Eagles will open Sub-State play against White City (11-12) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

No. Heights boys 74, West Franklin 46

The Northern Heights boys captured a share of the Flinthills League title with Osage City and the No. 1 seed in this week’s Sub-State tournament with a 74-46 victory over West Franklin on Saturday.

Despite what coach Lanny Massey called a “very sloppy game for us,” the Wildcats were never challenged by West Franklin after Heights opened the game with a 12-0 run.

“We just went through the motions (after the start),” Massey said.

Heights went ahead 20-9 heading into the second quarter, and then outscored West Franklin, 21-10, in the second frame to go into halftime leading 41-19, and the rout was on.

Four Heights players scored in double figures, led by Haydon Parks’ 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and a 5-of-6 showing at the free-throw line. Pete Symmonds added 15, while Levi Hizar and David Hanks each chipped in 14. Heights went 29-of-67 (43 percent) from the field overall.

Heights (18-2) also dominated the boards, out-rebounding West Franklin, 46-26. Heights had 22 offensive rebounds compared to nine for West Franklin.

“We had several kids that scored in double figures and we out-rebounded West Franklin by 20 boards, which is good, but it usually means there were a lot of missed shots,” Massey said. “Our shooting percentage wasn’t very good tonight, but our rebounding made up for it.”

Heights opens Sub-State play as the No. 1 seed when it faces eighth-seeded Eureka (0-20) at 7 tonight in Allen.

Crest boys 50, Olpe 36

The Olpe boys were doomed by a rough second-quarter showing in a 50-36 loss to Crest in the Regional title game at Hartford on Saturday.

Crest outscored Olpe 12-3 in the 8 minutes before halftime, and the Eagles could never recover. The only points for Olpe during the second period came on a basket by Cole Krueger and a free throw from Josh Klumpe. Meanwhile, Crest got four points apiece from Brandon Newton, Todd Johnston and Clinton Weldin in the game-defining stretch.

Olpe (21-2) spent the rest of the game playing catch-up, but could not make up the deficit. Crest held off the Eagles in the fourth quarter thanks in part to an 8-for-10 performance at the free-throw line.

Krueger led Olpe in scoring with 14 points, while Alex Medenciy scored 11, with nine points coming on three 3-pointers.

Johnston led all scorers with 21 points.

Olpe will open Sub-State as the No. 2 seed when it takes on Norwich (13-10) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at White Auditorium.

Northern Heights got out to a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised from there, taking a 53-42 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Northern Heights (12-8) began the game with a 14-4 run, and again outscored West Franklin 15-10 in the third quarter, which was enough to hold off a late charge by West Franklin (9-11).

Seven Ladycats scored, led by Andrea Miller’s 15 points. Miller also grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists. Sarah Boline also hit double figures with 13 points.

“I thought we played well,” Heights coach Tim Riemann said. “The girls did a good job of coming out and being aggressive.
