Olpe girls top Waverly, advance to Sub-State

Saturday, February 23, 2008

The Olpe girls survived a scare on Friday, making crucial plays down the stretch in a 55-47 victory over Waverly in the 1A Regional semifinals at Hartford.

The win guarantees the Lady Eagles (22-0) a spot in next week’s Sub-State.

“Some teams worry about the point spread, but at this point, you just have to figure out how to win,” Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said. “We had one of those games tonight. You saw two teams out there trying not to end their season.”

A pair of free throws by Waverly’s Megan Steward tied the game at 47 with just 1:52 left before Katie Moyer came through in the clutch.

The junior hit a guarded 3-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 50-47 lead, and Olpe went on to score the game’s final eight points.

Kathryn Flott and Kylie Haag led Olpe, contributing 18 points apiece.

Haag, who was battling the flu, was especially valuable late. She hit three free throws in the final minute and finished 5-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Jayme Hoag paced Waverly (11-9) with 16 points, while Steward added 13.

Olpe will face Southern Coffey County at 6 p.m. tonight in the Regional championship game in Hartford.

Last week, the Lady Eagles handed SCC (21-1) its only loss of the season.
