A number of Flint Hills Technical College students will compete nationally after placing in the State Business Professionals of America competition Feb. 14 to 16 in Wichita.
Business Professionals of America is a national co-curricular career and technical organization for high school, college and middle school students preparing for careers in business and information technology. The mission of Business Professionals of America is to contribute to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, academic, citizenship and technological skills.
Individual student results include:
- Alejandra Morales, Emporia, second place — keyboarding production, sixth place — spreadsheet applications and analysis;
- Lannie Lyman, Hartford, second place — banking and finance, fourth place — prepared speeach;
- Stacy Muse, Olpe, third place — banking and finance;
- Samantha Aikman, Hamilton, first place — keyboarding production, fourth place — basic office systems and procedures;
- Tyson Hinrichs, Emporia, second place — PC servicing and troubleshooting, first place — C++ programming;
- Steve Stone, Madison, third place — prepared speech.
Students also worked in teams and placed in two events including: Lyman, Aikman, Morales, first place — administrative support team; Stone and Hinrichs, second place, network design team.
FHTC students also placed in the top 10 in several categories including: Hinrichs and Stone, financial math and analysis; Lyman and Muse, insurance concepts and administrative support concepts; Hinrichs, information technology concepts; Stone and Lannie, management/marketing/human resources concepts; and Muse, parliamentary procedures concepts. Muse received the Kansas Merit Scholar award and the Torch award. Aikman received the Kansas Merit Scholar award. Flint Hills Technical College was also awarded the H.D. Shotwell Chapter Service Award for community service projects and leadership activities.
Students placing in the top 5 for individual events and teams placing in the top 2 advance to the National Business Professionals of America competition in Reno, Nev., in May.
