The cold rain outside failed to put a damper on the excitement inside the Flinthills Mall on Saturday.
Scrabble Scramble, a fund raiser for the Emporia Literacy Program, was a rousing success both for those who participated and for the literacy program, sponsored by the Flint Hills Technical College Adult Education Center. The event raised $2,486, with more donations yet to be counted. Funds raised will be used to fund books and materials for the literacy program’s students.
The 33 participants who played in the tournament enjoyed an afternoon of friendly competition, winning prizes, and good food. The prize categories for the event were highest score, second highest score, lowest score, highest single play, and highest number of points deducted at the end of a game. A prize was also awarded for a bingo (using all seven of a player’s tiles in one play). Prizes were awarded after each game or round and three rounds were played. Participants were divided into two groups according to ability.
At the end of the event two grand prizes were awarded for highest score in each division. Debra Pound won in the yellow division, and Janice Price won in the blue division.
Sponsors for the Scrabble Scramble were VEKTEK, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp., Tyson Fresh Meats, FHTC Student Senate, Capitol Federal, CoreFirst Bank & Trust, and Casey’s General Stores. Significant donors were Flint Hills Eyecare Associates, ESB Financial, Dillons, Sauder Custom Fabrication, Hopkins Manufacturing Corp., and Medicine Shoppe.
