Rock bands

J Mo’s Place, 518 Commercial St., started a Rock Band Competition on Wednesday from 8 to 11 p.m. According to the press release, the individuals in the competition will have their “own” band and will compete to go to the semi-finals. There will be one band advance each week. The competition will be played at medium level and the band with the best score will be the one to advance. At the semi-finals, there will be competition at expert level and there will be a chance to move on to the finals to be held in April, with the date to be announced.

Jazz concert

The Emporia State University Department of Music presents the Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall. On Sunday, Martin Cuéllar and Friends will perform a Concert of Music for Two Pianos at 3 p.m. in Heath Recital Hall. The Wind Ensemble Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Albert Taylor Hall. General admission is $5; students and senior citizens, $4. Information: 341-5431.

Storyteller

The Gridley Branch Library will be host for storyteller Jo Ho of Overland Park at 7 p.m. March 3. She will present a program, “Hooray for Hometown Heroes!,” featuring men and women from Kansas and Missouri, including Amelia Earhart, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and George Washington Carver. Ho has appeared throughout the U.S. at libraries, schools and festivals since 1989. The Gridley Friends of the Library will serve refreshments after the program. Door prizes will be provided by the R.E. French Family Educational Foundation.

Audition

Robyn Meahl of Admire, a student of Jane Wheat, will participate Saturday in the Honors Audition of the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition in Joplin, Mo. The audition is open to piano students under the age of 18 from the states of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma and Arkansas. If selected by the judges, up to five Honors Audition winners will be invited to attend all the performances in the 12th MSIPC in April and perform in a master class.

Artists wanted

Reservations are being taken for artists to reserve a 10 foot by 10 foot space, which costs $55, for the Hutchinson Outdoor Art Fair to be held from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. on May 3. If two artists share one exhibit space, the cost is $75. The deadline for reservations is March 19, 2008. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by April 16, 2008. Applicants should enclose a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope with the entry fee for return of confirmation and photos of artwork. The entry fee is non-refundable. Cash prizes and purchase awards are given. The juror will be artist and former Emporian Louis Copt of Lawrence, who works with oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, as well as photography and video, with a main emphasis on landscape painting. Copt is a board member of the Lawrence Art Center and past president of the Lawrence Arts Commission and Lawrence Art Guild. For more information, call (620) 663-1081.

Writing contest

The writing contest of the Kansas Authors Club District 2, which includes Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties, remains open for the next five weeks. The annual contest gives Kansas writers a chance to compete in four prose and four poetry categories. Prizes of $25, $15 and $10 will be offered. All entries should be unpublished. The closing date is March 28. Winners will be announced on May 10. There is a $3 fee for District 2 members and a $4 fee for non-members. Entries, including a self-addressed stamped envelope should be sent to Peg Nichols, KAC District 2 Contest Chair, 604 S. Grant, Olathe, KS 66061-4317.
