Thirteen Emporia High School art students had pieces selected for the National Scholastic Regional Art Exhibition Competition in Wichita this month. Art teacher Alan Keck said the students collectively have 21 pieces in the show.

“EHS was very well represented in the 3-dimensional area. Out of 80 3-dimensional pieces, EHS students were responsible for 20 of them,” Keck said. “That is 25 percent of all the 3-dimensional pieces in the show.”

Three students who received Gold Key Awards will have their work entered in the national competition in New York City.

EHS students received these awards:

• Joel Austin, two Gold Keys, one Silver Key and one honorable mention for glassblowing

• Jacob Davies, Gold Key and Silver Key for ceramics

• Nicholas Kuhn, Gold Key for jewelry

• Jose Alvarado, Silver Key for drawing

• Aaron Crumb, Silver Key for jewelry

• Jenna Howe, honorable mention for sculpture

• Josh Zuniga, one honorable mention and two general awards for glass

• Tiffany Scarberry, three general awards for jewelry

• Shaun Golden, Matt Wayman, Andrew Rees and Allisyn McCoy, general awards for jewelry

• Brian Leeds, general award for ceramics

The Gold Key is the highest award in the show followed by the Silver Key, honorable mention and general award.

The Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition will be open at the Wichita Center for the Arts through Feb. 24. The Center is open from 1 – 5 p.m. Tuesday – Sunday and admission is free.

The national judging will take place in New York in April. The national awards ceremony will also be in New York City and the national high school show will be held at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C., in June.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is a national program administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The most outstanding works of art from each of the affiliate programs are forwarded to New York City to be assessed on a national level.
