ESU softball drops 2 more

The No. 11 Emporia State softball team saw its early-season slide continue on Monday, as the Hornets lost 7-4 to Cameron and 5-3 to No. 5 Angelo State on the final day of the ASU Blue & Gold Classic in San Angelo, Texas.

ESU dug itself a deep hole in Game One, as Cameron posted three runs in the second and three in the third to build a 6-1 lead.

The Hornets cut the advantage to 6-4 in the sixth, thanks partly to a Miranda Campbell solo home run to start off the frame.

Trailing 7-4 in the seventh, ESU loaded the bases with one out before a pair of fly balls ended it.

Catcher Aubree Brattin led ESU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Campbell added a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored.

After defeating Angelo State on Sunday, ESU couldn’t come up with the same result in a two-run loss Monday.

ASU did its damage early on ESU starter Samantha Sheeley, scoring four runs in the first two innings.

Sheeley settled down after that, retiring 14 of the next 16 ASU batters.

It wouldn’t be enough. The Hornets scratched across just three runs and had only four baserunners after the second inning.

Jennifer Dace was the only ESU player with two hits.

Campbell, meanwhile, has five home runs in 10 games after hitting only three homers in 58 contests last year.
