Programs at the Zoo

“Kritters ’n Kids,” for first and second grade students will feature “Fabulous Frogs!” from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the David Traylor Zoo Education Center. Children will learn a froggy craft, frog game, and have a snack and story.

On Feb. 25, a “Kidzoocation” for 3 to 5 year old children will be held from 10 to 11a.m. featuring a “Hippity Hop” program. Children will learn answers to questions about frogs, along with learning a craft and game and having a snack and story.

To pre-register, call 341-4372. The cost for each event is $2 for Emporia Friends of the Zoo members; $4 for non-members.

The Zoo will celebrate “Leap Frog Friday” from 4 to 7 p.m. on Leap Day, Feb. 29, to kick off 2008 as the Year of the Frog. There will be frog games, crafts and activities, and live frogs and amphibians to view.

Spend a year in China

Full-time undergraduate students from the six Regents schools are eligible to submit applications to study for an academic year at Sias International University, Chinese partner of Fort Hays State University and the only American-owned university in China.

Discover Wichita State

Representatives from Wichita State University will be in Emporia from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Best Western Motel-Flint Hills Room, 3021 W. Highway 50 for an informal dinner for Emporia and area high school juniors, seniors and their parents and to provide information about WSU.

A $1,000 WSU scholarship will be awarded at the dinner. All seniors who have applied to WSU or submit an application and application fee on-site also will be eligible for the scholarship drawing. Dinner for each student and one guest is free. Additional guests are $11 each. Students can make mandatory online reservations at www.admissions.wichita.edu.

Severe weather training

Severe Weather Awareness training will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. March 12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olpe. A second training will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. March 27 at the Anderson Building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds.

The training is sponsored by the National Weather Service and Lyon County Emergency Management and is for individuals interested in learning more about severe weather and how to recognize it.

Trail ride

The Burlingame Saddle Club fundraiser Trail Ride will be held March 29, beginning at 10 a.m. , with check-in at 8 a.m. The rain date is April 5. The ride will be through the Flint Hills pastures between Harveyville and Auburn. Riders will stop around noon for lunch, then continue the ride, arriving back at the trailers. Lunch will not be provided. The cost is $20 each rider and $10 each for Burlingame Saddle Club members. Riders must furnish their own horses.
