ESU softball takes out No. 5 Angelo St.

It was a bittersweet day for the No. 11 Emporia State softball team on Sunday, as the Hornets went 1-2 at the Angelo State Blue & Gold Classic but still were able to knock off No. 5-ranked Angelo State, 6-4.

ESU fell in its first two games, losing to Incarnate Word, 6-5, and West Texas A&M, 5-4.

The Hornets’ win over the host team was sparked in the first inning by Miranda Campbell, who blasted a two-run home run to help give ESU a 3-0 lead.

Angelo State tied it in the third, but Campbell came through again in the fifth, contributing a two-run double to make it 5-3.

The Hornets wouldn’t trail after that.

Campbell finished 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Samantha Sheeley, meanwhile, picked up the complete-game win, allowing four runs and three hits while striking out 11.

Campbell was good — but not as lucky — with her bat earlier in the day.

In ESU’s first game, Campbell stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, one out, and her team trailing 6-5 extra innings.

The sophomore hit a liner to the shortstop, only to have it caught and thrown quickly to third base for a game-ending double play.

Campbell still finished the game 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.

Against West Texas A&M, ESU fell in a 4-0 first-inning hole and never could climb out.

Jennifer Dace, Aubree Brattin and Nicole Bergley had two hits each, while starter Brittany Norris took the loss.

ESU (3-5) was to face Cameron at 10 a.m. today before a rematch with Angelo State at noon in the final day of the ASU Classic.
