The No. 18 Emporia State baseball team started its season with two victories on Saturday, taking down Colorado School of the Mines 17-7 in Game One and 16-7 in Game Two.
The teams’ scheduled doubleheader on Sunday was canceled because of snow flurries and wind chills below 20 degrees in the Golden, Colo., area.
ESU used its offensive firepower to surge past Colorado Mines in Game One.
The Hornets trailed 6-4 going into the seventh inning before scoring six in the seventh, four in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Andy Anderson paced ESU’s bats, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Matt Marasco added three hits, a home run and three RBI, while Conner Crumbliss was 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
Ty Reese picked up the win after allowing just one run in four innings of relief work.
The Hornets began their offense earlier in Game Two.
ESU struck for three runs in the first, six in the second and three in the third to build a 12-3 lead. The Hornets scored at least one run in each of the first six innings.
South Alabama transfer Eric Shortell paced ESU’s bats, going 3-for-3 with a triple and six RBI. Keith Hernandez and Chris Dobler added home runs.
ESU (2-0) is scheduled to play one nine-inning game Tuesday against Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla.
