5 more ESU athletes earn NCAA provisional marks at Mo. Southern

The Emporia State indoor track and field team added five more provisional qualifiers during Saturday’s competition at the Missouri Southern Invitational in Joplin, Mo.

The Hornets were led by freshman Kenton Lonberger, who provisionally qualified with a second-place showing in the finals of the 60-meter dash (6.98 seconds).

ESU had a pair of provisionals in the triple jump, with Josh Honeycutt taking third (47 feet, 2.5 inches) and Doug Marshall taking fourth (47 feet, 1.5 inches).

Damon Birk had the other provisional qualifier in a throwing event, posting a fourth-place finish in the shot put (52 feet, 10.75 inches).

Jennifer Robinson was the only ESU female to have a provisional mark, grabbing fifth place in the high jump (5 feet, 5.75 inches).

“I am very pleased with the number of NCAA qualifiers we are picking up,” ESU coach Dave Harris said. “As we start to peak over the next two weeks, we have a chance for several more to represent us in Minnesota at the national meet.”

Other top-five showings for ESU on Saturday came from Brooke Kent in the 60-meter dash (fifth), Jaclyn Sill in the 600-yard run (third), Kathryn Davison in the 800-meter run (fourth), Robinson in the triple jump (fourth), Kyle Kotzman in the 600-yard run (third), William Hohmeier in the 1-mile run invitational (fourth) and Craig Saalfeld in the high jump (third).

The strong finish capped a good weekend for ESU.

On Friday at the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa, Jonel Rossbach beat the school record in the 5,000-meter run, breaking the old mark by more than 20 seconds.

Rossbach took seventh in the Division-I dominated event.

“This may have been the best regular-season race Jonel has ever run in,” Harris said. “This was very similar to the national championships in cross country. She ran with the top three for a good portion of the race before (race-winner Lisa) Koll just ran away from everyone.”

ESU will participate in the Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday before heading to the KSU Open in Manhattan on Saturday.
