Emporia students advance to county spelling bee

Nine Emporia students qualified to compete Friday in the 2008 Lyon County Spelling Bee at Olpe High School. The winner and runner-up of the Lyon County Spelling Bee will compete March 15 in the Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by the Topeka-Capital Journal.
School spelling bees were held in the past few weeks at Emporia Middle School, Lowther North Intermediate School and Lowther South Intermediate School. The top three winners from each school bee are eligible for the county competition.
The school winners at EMS were: Nishat Yasmin, first place; Lauren Miller, second; and Mary Miller, third. Georgina Rubio was the fourth-place finisher and will serve as the alternate.
School winners at LNIS were: Derek Bullock, first; Emily Sichel, second; Jessica Parks, third; and Keith Renteria, alternate.
School winners at LSIS were: Meg Detwiler, first; Victor Quintana, second; Naty Hernandez, third; and Alisha Henery, alternate.
The regional spelling bee winner will win an all-expense paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Washington , D.C.
