It's Project Emporia time! February has been proclaimed Project Emporia Month. This is a citywide canned-food drive headed by the Emporia High School Student Council to restock the shelves of the Salvation Army, SOS shelter and the Men’s Rescue Mission. The drive has been successful in the past, thanks to the support of the community. This year, we have many ways in which everyone can get involved and make a difference.
Any non-perishable food items that you would like to donate can be brought to Emporia High School or Emporia State Bank during the month of February. Emporia State Bank has offered to match up to 1,250 food items donated at its two locations.
Also, food drop-offs are located at many local grocery stores. Student Council members and representatives from clubs at Emporia High School will be at grocery stores on Feb. 23 to encourage everyone to donate an extra can. Please take the time to buy a few extra items for donations. Just look for a grocery cart at the front of the store with a Project Emporia sign on it.
Monetary donations are also encouraged. The Bernard and Jane Reeble Foundation has offered to match up to $1,500 in monetary donations. All checks may be made out to EHS Project Emporia and mailed to EHS Student Council, 3302 W. 18th Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.
The annual canned food scavenger hunt is from 2 to 5 p.m Sunday. We ask that community members have any items that they wish to donate ready to give to Student Council members as we go door-to-door.
For more information, call me or the Student Council sponsor, Katie Bacon, at EHS, 341-2365. Emporia High School thanks you for your support. With your help, we can make Project Emporia a success and a source of pride in our community!
