Heights boys aggressive in big win over Mission Valley

The Northern Heights boys dominated defensively in a 53-27 victory over Mission Valley on Tuesday.

The Wildcats led 20-4 after the first quarter and 38-12 at halftime. After that, the rout was on.

“We played with a fire defensively that has been missing for a couple of weeks,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “I was pleased with our ball pressure and our ability to get to and set the traps.”

Haydon Parks led Heights with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The senior made 8 of 15 shots.

Kenneth Bronson added nine points on a 4-for-7 shooting night.

Heights won despite going just 1-of-10 from three-point range.

The Wildcats finished 23-for-55 from the floor (42 percent).

“We missed some easy shots,” Massey said, “but I was happy with the way our kids moved the ball and created shots for each other.”

Olpe boys 38, Wichita Sunrise Christian 35

The Olpe Eagles pulled their act together in the second half, bringing home a 38-35 victory on Tuesday night in their game against Wichita Sunrise Christian.

The Eagles held a lead throughout the first quarter but fell behind by six at the half.

Regaining composure during the break, the Eagles outscored Sunrise 21-12 in the second half.

Bradley Argabright and Cole Krueger led Olpe, as Argabright went for 13 while Krueger came in close behind with 10.

“It was a good win,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “They’re an awfully good team. They have a lot of size on us. Defensively I thought we did a good job.”

Hartford boys 57, Bishop Seabury 38

The Hartford boys were consistent throughout in a 57-38 victory over Bishop Seabury.

At the conclusion of the first half, the Hartford Jaguars had already built a 13-point lead, but it didn’t end there.

Coming back strong for the second half, the Jaguars continued to outscore Bishop Seabury in every quarter.

The Jaguars’ Adam Ewy led his team in scoring with 14 points. Justin Farr and Aaron Thomsen followed close behind, as Farr had 12 and Thomsen added 10.

Lyndon girls 52, Waverly 41

Krista Banzhaf scored 20 points, leading the Lyndon girls past Waverly, 52-41.

Banzhaf did most of her work in the second quarter, scoring 12 of the Lady Tigers’ 16 points during the frame.

Lyndon used a 16-5 run that period to take a commanding 29-17 lead into halftime.

Stephanie Goetz added 10 points for the Lady Tigers, while Cara Bolz had nine.

Megan Steward paced Waverly with 19 points, with 12 of those coming in the second half.

Brenna Wilson added seven points and also contributed all five of the Lady Bulldogs’ points in the second quarter.

Lyndon was helped by a solid night at the free-throw line, making 20 of 28 attempts (71 percent). Waverly had just 13 attempts from the line, making eight of those tries.

No. Heights girls 42, Mission Valley 37

Tuesday night’s game was neck-and-neck, as the Northern Heights Ladycats battled their way to a 42-37 victory against the Mission Valley Lady Vikings.

Closing out the first half with a four-point lead, the Ladycats never backed down. Heights went on an 11-5 run in the third quarter to take a 10-point advantage, then hung on from there.

“Tonight was a good challenge for us,” Northern Heights coach Tim Riemann said. “The game was pretty rough and baskets were not easy to come by. I thought the girls did a good job of making plays when they had to, and they really stepped up late in the game.”

The Ladycats saw fairly even scoring throughout their entire team. Standing out was Sarah Boline, who had a team-high 15 points.

Following Boline was Andrea Miller, who had nine points.

Hartford girls 70, Bishop Seabury 16

Beginning their domination in the first quarter, the Hartford Lady Jaguars never let Bishop Seabury stay close in a 54-point victory.

Hartford led 21-5 after the first quarter and 43-7 at halftime.

The Lady Jags didn’t allow Seabury to score more than five points in any quarter.

Kellie Farr and Amy Bolen led the scoring, as Farr had 15 points while Bolen shot for 13.

Bishop Seabury saw nearly all of their points come from Brea Phipps. Phipps was responsible for 12 of the team’s 16 points.
