Gritty Bulldogs have all the answers in win over Lebo

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

— Sid Childers saw no panic in his Madison Bulldog teammates, even after a disastrous first 2 1/2 minutes had forced coach Alan Brown to call timeout.

“We don’t get rattled on the floor,” the Madison senior said, “because we’ve been playing together forever.”

That familiarity paid off for the Bulldogs on Tuesday, as Madison had an answer for every one of Lebo’s runs in a 63-53 victory at Madison High School.

The Wolves took control early, hitting four of their first six shots to grab a 9-0 lead with 5:33 remaining in the first quarter.

Madison’s maturity — and composure — showed through soon after.

Following a pep talk from Brown in the timeout, Madison closed the quarter on a 16-2 spurt, helped by six points during the stretch from both Eric Porter and Kaleb Schankie.

The run turned a nine-point deficit into a 16-11 lead.

“We got back on the track,” Brown said, “so I was really pleased with that.”

Lebo regained the lead at the start of the second quarter with a quick 6-0 run, but again, Madison responded.

This time, Childers put in consecutive layups, and Porter hit a pair of free throws as the Bulldogs reeled off six unanswered points of their own.

“That’s a problem of ours — we play hard in spurts,” Lebo coach Matt Barrett said. “We need to learn to play hard the whole 32 minutes of the game.”

Madison extended its advantage in the second half, using a 14-2 run to build its lead to 48-31.

The highlight of the stretch came from Porter, who hit back-to-back 3-pointers from NBA range.

Lebo’s Blake Jones cut the advantage to 61-53 with 1:11 left in the game, but the Wolves wouldn’t come any closer.

Madison was led by Porter with 21 points, while Schankie added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Childers also hit a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

“The ball was just kind of bouncing my way,” Childers said. “I just got in there, banged around, used my body, pulled down rebounds and put them back up.”

Lebo’s loss overshadowed a strong outing by Cameron Smith.

The 6-foot-3 senior finished with 27 points on 13-of-18 shooting.

“I thought Cameron worked hard. I was very proud of his effort on both ends of the floor,” Barrett said.

Madison’s Michael Luthi added 10 points.

The Bulldogs dominated the glass, out-rebounding Lebo 33-24.

After the hot start, the Wolves finished 23-of-55 from the floor (42 percent).

“There wasn’t any flow to our offense tonight,” Barrett said. “We weren’t on the same page very often the whole night.”

After considering herself a passer for so long, Madison’s Molly Ballard broke out on a scoring spree Tuesday night.

The 5-foot-3 junior posted a career-high 10 points, helping Madison to a 57-45 victory over Lebo.

“I’ve never been a shooter,” Ballard said. “I never really thought it was my place to shoot a lot.”

That changed Tuesday.

After getting some shooting help from coach Glen Stout — Ballard was flipping the ball back onto her fingers just before releasing it, causing an inconsistent shot — the senior showed her new form against Lebo, draining 2 of 3 three-point attempts.

“She’s going up smooth,” Stout said, “and it’s making all the difference in the world.”

Madison took control in the second half with its pressure defense.

Stout, in an effort to keep his players out of foul trouble, didn’t press much in the first half, as his team took a 26-24 lead into the break.

He released the Lady Bulldogs after the intermission, and the pressure forced Lebo into 15 second-half turnovers.

The Lady Wolves had just five giveaways in the first half.

“Those unforced turnovers just killed us,” Lebo coach Jay Applegate said. “They got us out of sync, and then we got rattled and we just didn’t get back up.”

Shelby Buster emerged for Madison in the third quarter, scoring three straight baskets to help Madison to a 37-32 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs followed with a 14-2 run in the fourth quarter to grab a 53-40 advantage and put the game out of reach.

Morgan Stout led Madison with 17 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while Buster added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Along with Ballard, Chelcie Schankie also hit double figures with 10 points.

Morgan Laflin and Lauren Schlesener had 11 points each for Lebo.
