Bulldogs' Wold, Harshman win home tourney titles

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Helped by titles from Aaron Wold and Brendan Harshman, the Chase County wrestling team finished third in its home invitational this past weekend, despite the absence of several wrestlers because of injury.

Harshman dominated the 125-pound weight class, recording two pins and a technical fall on his way to back-to-back Chase County Invite titles. Wold matched Harshman’s production in the 152-pound weight class, as he also came through with two pins and a technical fall, giving the senior his first-ever tournament title.

Harshman and Wold helped Chase County record 109.5 points to finish behind first-place Marion (149.5) and Emporia High’s JV squad (112.5) in the team standings.

A pair of junior wrestlers also came through with second-place showings, as Alec Wold at 171 pounds and Trenton Harshman at 215 pounds each made it to their first career finals before falling in the title bouts.

Other placers for Chase County were: Glen Blue, third at 103 pounds; Chance Mildward, third at 285 pounds; Cody Simpson, fourth at 171 pounds; and Cody Peterson, fourth at 215 pounds. Simpson and Peterson wrestled as unattached competitors so they could get varsity experience, Chase County coach Derick Budke said.

The Bulldogs were without the services of seniors Nathan Phipps (145 pounds) and Andrew Sisson (160), as each sat out because of injuries.

“Their absence really hurt us,” Budke said. “Anytime you are missing varsity wrestlers, it makes it tough, but when those wrestlers are seniors wrestling in their last home invitational, you really do miss more than just the points they score.”

Four wrestlers take 1st at Newton Open

The Emporia Kids Wrestling Club had a clean-up day last Saturday at the Newton Open, as all 13 wrestlers finished in fourth place or higher, with four wrestlers capturing the tournament title.

Ten-year-old Hayden Perry (120 pounds), 12-year-olds Max Detwiler (76 pounds) and Braxton Marstall (100 pounds) and 14-year-old Drew Detwiler (95 pounds) all won their respective weight classes.

On Sunday, the novice wrestlers competed at the KCWC meet, with Larry Nadeau winning the championship at 52 pounds in the 6-year-old division.
