Boy Scouts will distribute plastic grocery bags throughout Emporia on Saturday to help in a food drive for the Salvation Army.
According to information from Erik McGuire, Boy Scout representative in Emporia, the bags will be hung on doors on Saturday to encourage citizens to give canned goods and other nonperishable foods to the drive.
The bags will contain instructions, explaining that donors may place food items outside their doors to be collected by the Boy Scouts on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The effort is one that will be repeated in cities throughout northeast Kansas and nationwide, McGuire said.
“This is a great way for Scouts to learn about community service and participate in a project they can feel good about,” McGuire said. “... One of our goals here in Emporia is to ease the burden of families affected by the recent Tyson layoffs.”
Foods need to be nonperishable and packaged in non-breakable containers.
If a bag is not picked up on Feb. 23, donations may be delivered to the Salvation Army, McGuire said.

What a great idea to teach kids the value of community service. And how convenient it will be for all of us to put a few canned goods in the sack and just place it on our front porches. Right on!

Way to go Erik. I hope the Scouts will collect enough food to make a
difference for the people that are in need. Keep up the good ideas.
