Rossbach runs 2nd-fastest mile in Division II this year

Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach posted a provisional mark and nearly set a school record at the Adidas Classic hosted by the University of Nebraska on Saturday.

Rossbach ran a 4:56.96 in the mile run to finish fourth and also provisionally qualify for Nationals. It was the second-fastest Division-II time in the nation this year.

“I am especially pleased with Jonel’s mile time since we have been held back by weather doing any speed work,” ESU coach Dave Harris said. “She has been relying on her strength built up in cross country.

“Last year I had her running shorter races and working on speed constantly. I believe going to more volume and strength now will pay off at the end of indoor and moving into the big races outdoors.”

Rossbach also placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:03.97. Though the 3,000-meter is not a championship event, Rossbach’s time still was good enough to be the second-fastest in school history.

The ESU indoor track and field team will split its squad this week, sending some athletes to the ISU Classic in Ames, Iowa, and others to the MSSU Invitational in Joplin, Mo., on Friday and Saturday.
