Krause wins league title

Sophomore Derek Krause captured Emporia’s only title for the Spartans boys swimming and diving team at the Centennial League meet in Topeka, as Krause won the diving competition on Thursday to claim the league title.
Despite Krause providing the only championship for EHS, the Spartans as a team still managed to finish second overall, finishing with 337.5 points to place behind league-champion Washburn Rural (402).
Emporia High got three other top-three finishes in the swimming events held on Friday.
Aaron Clark placed third in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1 minute, 54.89 seconds to finish behind Washburn Rural’s Jeremiah Ungerer (1:47.75) and Topeka High’s Eric Sparks (1:48.02).
In the 50 freestyle, Sergio Segura finished third in a time of 23.91 seconds.
Also, Clark and Segura teamed up with Scott Peterson and Cord Stanley to place third in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing in a time of 1:36.47. The squad was edged out by teams from Topeka High (1:33.69) and Manhattan (1:36.14).
The final event of the season, the State swimming and diving competition, begins next Friday at the Capital Federal Natatorium in Topeka.
