Madison boys win in OT

Saturday, February 9, 2008

Michael Luthi hit a running layup with 2.2 seconds left in overtime, and the Madison boys escaped with a 51-49 overtime victory over White City on Friday in Madison.

“It was an ugly win — there’s no other way to describe it,” Madison coach Alan Brown said. “We played ugly, and hopefully we learn that we can’t take any opponents for granted.”

Madison seemed to have control of the game at halftime.

Using a 15-6 second-quarter run, the Bulldogs held a comfortable 26-16 advantage at the intermission.

White City stormed back, going on a 19-6 spurt in the third quarter to take a 35-32 lead.

After a back-and-forth final quarter, Luthi hit a jumper to put Madison up by three with 45 seconds left in regulation before White City’s Mark Morgan drained an NBA 3-pointer to send it to overtime.

“He’s probably one of the top three players we’ve seen this year,” Brown said of Morgan. “I see him playing at the next level.”

After Luthi’s final layup in the overtime, Morgan’s desperation three came up short.

Kaleb Schankie led Madison with 15 points, while Eric Porter added 14.

Morgan finished with a game-high 21 points.

Madison will have its final home game of the season Tuesday against Lebo.

“We’re winning different kinds of ways,” Brown said. “Hopefully this will help us down the road, because any team can win on any given night.”

The Marais des Cygnes Valley boys couldn’t hold on to an 11-point halftime lead, falling to Word of Life 49-45 on Friday night in Melvern.

The Trojans, helped by a 15-6 run in the second quarter, led 26-15 at the break.

The Word of Life sharpshooter scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half, helping his team outscore MdCV, 34-19, in the final 16 minutes.

MdCV coach Thad Thurston said most disappointing was that the Trojans did hold Word of Life’s other star player, Tony Rieman, to just five points.

“That usually happens to us. We play really good on one good player, and the other exposes us,” Thurston said. “Jacobs had quite a second half.”

MdCV was led by Drew Woodruff’s 20 points. Chisom Spencer added double digits with 10.
