The board of directors for the Regional Development Association of East Central Kansas discussed revising the city’s performance-based tax incentive policy for companies at its monthly meeting this morning.
Association President Kent Heermann said revision of the policy is done periodically, but with the flurry of industrial activity in the city last year, the RDA didn’t have time to do address it.
“We’re going to do that with earnest in the next two to three months,” Heermann said.
Companies that expand and grow in the Emporia community must meet certain thresholds in salary and investment to be eligible for the tax incentives. The RDA board must send its revised incentive policy to the city commission for approval.
“We have to be competitive, but certainly, there are a lot of factors that enter into the equation,” Heermann said.
Also discussed at the meeting was that Emporia’s and Lyon County’s designation as an enhanced non-metrpolitan enterprise zone expires on May 31. Heermann said there’s new legislation pending to amend the expiration, but the RDA has to go through the process of reapplying this spring.
