Lyon County puts off redistricting

Friday, February 8, 2008

Lyon County commissioners won’t be changing commission districts following discussion during Thursday’s commission meeting.

Commissioners are required to keep districts equal and look at the population numbers periodically, Scott Briggs, Lyon County Commission chair, said this morning. Commissioners must use the most recent census report, which was done in 2000.

“We decided not to do that (re-district),” Briggs said. “We decided with the Tyson issues that nobody knows how the population is going to play out.”

Briggs said the commission will wait for the 2010 census. The county will receive the numbers in 2011 and will act on the districts if needed at that time.

In other business, commissioners discussed Road 190 between Americus Road and Graphic Arts Road. The road is being discussed because when construction starts on 18th Avenue for the bridge over the Kansas Turnpike, traffic is expected to increase on Road 190 and the road needs to be smoothed.

County Engineer Chip Woods said this morning that commissioners authorized the work to get the ruts out of the road. Woods said the work probably will be done early in the summer.
