The No. 11 Emporia State softball team opened its season with a split at the Abilene Christian Tournament on Thursday, taking down No. 9 St. Mary’s, 5-4, before falling to the host school ACU, 12-4, in the nightcap.
Samantha Sheeley went the distance in Game One for the Hornets, going six scoreless innings before holding on in the seventh.
With a 5-0 lead, Sheeley allowed four runs in the final frame, but the senior was able to strike out Kelcy Walker with a runner on to end the contest.
Miranda Campbell provided most of the offense, going 3-for-3 with a home run. Shelbe Hughes added a two-run double in the seventh that drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run.
ESU couldn’t stop the Abilene Christian bats in Game Two.
The Hornets’ Megan Dennis took the loss, allowing 10 hits and eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Campbell provided her second homer of the day, while Jenna Potter also added a solo shot.
