Emporia offers enough fitness centers that those wanting to get in shape or stay in shape should be able to find a workout spot that fits their needs.
Curves for Women, 1622 Industrial Road, offers women the chance to get in shape with hydraulic resistance machines. The facility’s 18 hydraulic machines adjust resistance automatically based on the user’s ability level. Sitting beside each machine is a recovery station where the exerciser performs aerobic movement to maintain her heart rate.
A regular membership at Curves costs $34. It’s open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.
With membership, the Lee Beran Recreation Center, 313 West 4th Avenue, includes its Butts and Guts class, which targets the areas implied by its name. The ERC also offers six-week yoga sessions for $30 and a Fit Forever class for members 55 years of age or older. The Fit Forever class costs $5 per month on top of regular membership.
Regular membership in the ERC costs $30. Seniors can join for $25 and students for $22.
The Emporia State Student Recreation and Fitness Center is exclusive to ESU students, staff, faculty and alumni. University employees can use the rec center for $10.50 per month, while student membership is paid through tuition and fees. Alumni memberships cost $16.35 per month. Guest passes are available for $4 per use for non-campus community accompanied by a campus community member.
The ESU rec center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The center offers classes in yoga and meditation, martial arts, and conditioning for toning, strength and cardio.
Walburn’s Gym is planning a major expansion in the next several months, owner Brian Walburn said. The athletic club at 1007 Commercial Street plans to feature a new and improved fitness room, a hair and nail salon, a circuit training area similar to Curves for Women, a juice bar and a new children’s corner.
No date has been set for completion of the expansion.
A regular membership at the club costs $35, or $25 for students. Walburn’s is open from 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Classes available at Walburn’s, all of which are complimentary with membership, include Pilates, Zumba, kickboxing, and PiYo.

This article was a sidebar to a longer feature on Emporia Fitness' expansion. Both ran in a special section, Health Services of the Flint Hills, that was inserted into the Thursday, Feb. 7, edition of The Gazette.

Emporia Fitness has an impressive new facility that I was excited to join and the rates are extremely reasonable as well as having a knowledgeable and friendly staff. I have really enjoyed working out there.
