3 novice wrestlers
take titles at DeSoto
The Emporia Kids Wrestling Club had three of its novice wrestlers earn first-place finishes on Sunday at the DeSoto Open.
Avion Graddick, Hunter Williams and Marcos Diaz each earned titles, going a combined 8-0.
Graddick, 6, finished 3-0 in the 46-pound weight class, with one victory coming by pin while another was the result of a technical fall. Williams, 8, achieved one pin on his way to finishing with a 2-0 record at 52 pounds. Diaz, 10, pinned all three of his opponents to win the 73-pound class.
German Diaz (8 years old, 49 pounds), Dylan Preeo (8, HWT) and Miguel Gudino (10, 95) each picked up second-place finishes.

Chase County wrestling places 8th at Silver Lake
This past weekend, the Chase County wrestling team traveled to Silver Lake to take on some of the toughest teams in Class 4A and 5A, and despite some wrestlers battling illness, the Bulldogs came away with an 8th-place finish out of 13 teams.
“We always expect Silver Lake to be a challenging tournament, but with the number of kids we had coming back from the flu, this year was harder than most,” CCHS coach Derick Budke said. “I was pleased with the toughness our kids showed during the meet.”
Brendan Harshman and Ben Green paced the Bulldogs, as each finished third in their respective weight classes.
Green finished his day with a 3-1 record, highlighted by two pins, at 140 pounds.
For the first time this season, Harshman did not make the finals of a tournament, as a 5-4 loss to Brett LaMar of Silver Lake in the semifinals dropped him to the consolation bracket. He did, however, finish with two technical falls on the day.
Andrew Sisson at 160 pounds and Cody Peterson at 285 pounds each finished fourth to round out the Chase County placers.
